Fried Green (or ripe) Tomatoes


1 lb. Tomatoes (Approx. 4)  If using red tomatoes, they must be firm.

1/2 Cup White Cornmeal

1/4 Cup Flour

2 Tbs. Sesame Seeds

1/4 tsp. Onion Salt

1/8 tsp. Pepper

1 Beaten Egg

2 Tbs. Milk

Cooking oil for frying

 

Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch slices. In a pie plate, combine cornmeal, flour, sesame seeds, onion salt, and pepper. In a small mixing bowl combine egg and milk. Dip tomato slices first into egg mixture and then into dry mixture, covering evenly. In a heavy fry pan heat about 1/4-inch of oil over medium heat. Fry slices approx. 2 minutes on each side until browned. Drain on paper towels.

Serve warm.  Delicious!

NOTEWhile fried green tomatoes are popular down South, in Utah they like their fried tomatoes, ripe!
